An 86-year-old Orinda man who went missing Wednesday evening was
found alive Thursday inside his car in a ravine off Happy Valley Road in Lafayette, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
The man had gone out Wednesday afternoon to run some errands and was supposed to be back by 4 p.m.
When he still hadn't returned by 6 p.m. his wife called police and reported him missing, Lee said.
Because of his age and some of the medications he was taking, he was considered at-risk and the sheriff's office began searching for him on the ground and with a California Highway Patrol helicopter.
As part of their search, the sheriff's office also notified local hospitals, local police agencies and entered the man's name into the state missing persons database, but there was no sign of him, Lee said.
At about 11:15 a.m. the sheriff's office got a call from the man's family saying they had found his vehicle about 50 feet off of Happy Valley Road, Lee said. The vehicle appeared to have struck a tree.
The man was dehydrated but breathing when he was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center for evaluation, Lee said.
