Millbrae House Fire Damage Estimated At $50K
MILLBRAE (BCN) ―
A two-alarm fire that burned the basement of a house in Millbrae on Friday afternoon caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage, Millbrae Fire Department Division Chief Kevin McWhirter said Saturday.
McWhirter said that he was driving by the split-level house at 403 Palm Ave. at about 2:50 p.m. when he noticed smoke throughout the street and coming out of the house's chimney.
Firefighters responded to the blaze and had it under control at about 3:20 p.m., according to McWhirter.
The fire, which appears to have started in the basement, caused about $30,000 damage to the property and about $20,000 damage to the home's contents.
Fire officials do not believe the fire is suspicious and will wait until the woman living in the house returns from a trip to determine which items in the basement might have contributed to starting the fire, McWhirter said.
The main portion of the house is intact but it sustained smoke damage, and the woman will be temporarily displaced, McWhirter said.
No injuries were reported from the fire, McWhirter said.
