Horrific Pedestrian Crash Shuts I-680 In Martinez
MARTINEZ (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
A gruesome pedestrian collision on Interstate 680 in Martinez closed all lanes for some time early Thursday morning.
The California Highway Patrol was first advised of a crash when a motorist on Highway 680 reported hitting something, perhaps a person, at around 2 a.m., CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.
Arriving CHP and Martinez police officers confirmed that a pedestrian on the roadway had been struck, probably numerous times before the reporting party's vehicle struck it, and body parts and pieces were scattered in all lanes.
The entire southbound portion of the highway was closed to accommodate an investigation and cleanup of the victim, who is believed to be a male, according to Van Eckhardt.
Traffic was directed off the highway at marina Vista Avenue until a Sig-alert issued at around 2:30 a.m. was canceled at 3:30 a.m.
CHP investigators have not determined how the body came to rest vulnerably in lanes of traffic, Van Eckhardt said, as there were no abandoned vehicles in the area.
