Cyclist Injured In SF Hit-And-Run Accident

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― A young woman riding a bicycle down Market Street at the intersection of Octavia in San Francisco, sustained major injuries in an apparent hit-and-run collision Sunday night.

The unidentified woman was riding a bicycle at about 11:50 p.m. when a truck headed for the freeway hit her, police said. She was transported to a local hospital with major injuries, and is described as in serious condition.

The truck driver then fled the scene, but turned himself in three hours later.

Police are still trying to figure out who had the right of way.

"It was a pretty chaotic scene. A lot of evidence was strewn about. One of the things we had to do was to control traffic, divert traffic coming onto the freeway obviously, because most of the evidence was strewn about onto the onramp," said San Francisco Police Sergeant Joshua Espinoza.

City officials have made several safety improvements to the intersection because there have been so many car and bicycle collisions there in recent years.
