Marin Co. Voters Pass School Bonds, Service Taxes
MARIN COUNTY (BCN) ―
Four local measures on Tuesday's Marin County primary election ballot appear to have passed and a fifth remained too close to call early Wednesday morning.
Measure A, a $6.75 million bond issue for improvements in the Ross School District, garnered 73.1 percent support, according to unofficial election results.
The measure required 55 percent of votes in its favor to pass.
The money will be used to build second-story classrooms that will eliminate the need for long-term portable classrooms and create space for a privately funded gymnasium and community center.
Measure B, an eight-year, $375 annual parcel tax to support the Nicasio School District, appears to have passed with 70.8 percent of the vote after needing two-thirds support for approval.
The money will help maintain small class sizes, increase compensation for teachers and staff, and support school operations and instructional programs. A 4 percent annual cost-of-living adjustment will ensue as a result of the measure's passage.
Measure C, which calls for residents of Belvedere to continue adjusting its appropriation limit for fire protection and emergency medical services through June 30, 2012, passed easily, with 86.9 percent support. The measure needed majority approval.
Measure D, which extends the municipal service tax in Ross until June 30, 2012, passed with 61.7 percent support. The measure needed majority approval.
Measure E, which establishes a special $45 annual parcel tax in Mesa Park to maintain and operate Firehouse Community Park for four years, may have narrowly garnered the two-thirds of the vote needed to pass, with 66.98 percent, but results remain unofficial.
The three candidates for Belvedere City Council were all elected to the council, splitting the vote almost evenly. John Telischak and Jerry Butler are incumbents. The third council member elected Tuesday is Sandra Donnell.
Two incumbents appear to have been re-elected to the Ross Town Council, while one new member was elected. R. Scot Hunter and Richard Strauss were re-elected to the town council with 19.3 and 18.1 percent of the votes, respectively. Christopher Marin, the only non-incumbent elected, acquired 22.5 percent of the votes, the most of any candidate.
