South Bay Residents Unite For 'Litter Pickup Day'

 Environment & The Green Beat

(CBS 5 / BCN) Residents across the South Bay were up bright and early Saturday morning to pick up litter in their communities as part of the nationwide Ninth Annual Great American Litter Pick Up.

Residents in the cities of Los Gatos, Cupertino, San Jose, Saratoga and Campbell participated in the event to help clean up their communities and to give their neighborhoods facelifts.

"It's about working together and taking pride in your community," Rotary Club of Cupertino spokeswoman Kim Worrall said.

Residents in Cupertino were picking up litter along state Highway 9, she said. Meanwhile in another neighborhood, some community members helped repair the house of an elderly widow who has fallen on hard times.

"The Rotary's motto is 'service above self,'" Worrall said Saturday morning. "It gives you pride to help your community."

Nearly 300 community members signed up to participate in a pick up at San Jose's Oak Grove High School hosted by Councilman Ash Kalra. Mayor Chuck Reed, who was scheduled to stop by, said that community involvement is crucial to removing litter and graffiti from neighborhoods.

"By working together, we can all help eradicate litter and beautify our city," Reed said in a statement.
