Car Plows Into San Jose Bakery, 2 Hurt
by Tony Russomanno
SAN JOSE (CBS 5) ―
This morning, police and witnesses say an older woman driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake on her car and drove into San Jose's Bijan Bakery, seriously injuring two people.
As the 60-year-old woman shot forward in her black Honda Civic, Golam Rowshan was sitting at an outdoor table talking business with a friend. "There was one chair here, one chair here, and then one table between us and then all of a sudden the car came and take my friend away," said Rowshan.
Firefighters carried Jamashidi out of the wreckage, still in part of his chair. He endured a painful transfer to a stretcher to get him to the hospital, where he was in serious condition with a broken leg.
Meantime, another team of firefighters worked to free the second victim, a 20-year-old woman who worked behind the counter. She had two broken legs and was also in serious condition. "It appeared that the employee was trapped in the counter with her legs up against the counter, and the car on her," said San Jose Fire Capt. Alberto Olmos.
Police would not identify the driver. She was badly shaken up but otherwise not hurt as she was helped away by the bakery's owner.
Police say the driver was not arrested or given a citation, but the accident report will be reviewed by the District Attorney.
Traffic experts say older drivers are more prone to this type of accident, caused by confusion or slower reaction times.
Statistics do show younger male drivers have the most number of accidents, but the number of senior drivers will more than double in the next 15 years as the boomer generation ages.
