SAN LEANDRO (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) ― Firefighters were on the scene Friday morning of a three-alarm fire burning at a machine shop in San Leandro.

The fire department received a call at 9:35 a.m. Friday that a fire had started at M.A.R.'s Engineering Co. Inc., located at 699 Montague Ave., said Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

The fire was contained at approximately 10:30 a.m., said Knowles, but the main warehouse area was destroyed by the flames.

Alameda County fire crews were removing business equipment from the office section of the building. Knowles said the attached office was salvaged but received some light smoke and water damage.

An investigator was on scene Friday afternoon trying to determine the cause of the fire.

Firefighters from the Alameda County Fire Department and from the Oakland Fire Department responded. Knowles said 15 pieces of equipment are on-site with about 50 firefighters on hand.

Two employees were transported to San Leandro Hospital for minor injuries. One man had an asthma attack and the other man received minor burns. There were no reported firefighter injuries, said Knowles.

Witnesses said smoke from the blaze was visible from Interstate 880.

"I'm looking at a building that is just engulfed in flames," described passerby Danny Freitas. "The flames are very high, at least two, three stories high right now and there's nothing but black smoke spewing."
