Livermore PD Puts Focus On Senior Drivers

LIVERMORE (BCN) ― Livermore police this month will be focusing education and enforcement efforts on drivers who are more than 70 years old.

In 2008, there were more than 120 collisions involving that age group of drivers, and nearly 70 percent of those collisions were caused by the elderly driver, according to police.

Nationwide, drivers older than 70 represent about 13 percent of the driving public and will make up a quarter of the driving public by 2030, police said.

Medical conditions and medications common to seniors can greatly affect their ability to drive.

In the interest of public safety, the Department of Motor Vehicles requires all drivers 70 years old or older to physically go to their local DMV office when it is time to renew their licenses, and they must take both a written and eye test, according to police.

The top restriction for senior drivers is vision-related, and generally requires the driver to wear glasses or contact lenses.

Livermore police reminds all drivers to drive safely and drive within their limits.
