Peninsula Lawyer Gets 4 Years For Embezzlement

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

REDWOOD CITY (BCN) ― A Redwood City attorney was sentenced to four years in state prison Monday for embezzling more than $800,000 from a client's trust following his death, a deputy district attorney said Tuesday.

Edward Hume, 60, was also ordered to pay restitution in an amount to be determined for transferring $824,361 from Frederick Helversen's trust into Hume's personal account after Helversen died in 2002, San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Hume pleaded no contest to felony embezzlement at his pretrial conference in San Mateo County Superior Court on Monday in exchange for the four-year prison sentence.

Hume, a licensed attorney in Redwood City since 1975, represented Helversen in the Helversen Trust, and for the 18 months following Helversen's death, prosecutors said he placed the more than $800,000 into his own account.

Hume's restitution report is scheduled for Nov. 19. He had been in custody in lieu of $500,000 bail prior to his pretrial conference.
