Water Main Break, Gas Leak In Lafayette

LAFAYETTE (CBS 5 / BCN) ― East Bay Municipal Utilities District crews condinued to work Wednesday to repair a water main break that caused damage to four homes in Lafayette, a utility spokesman said.

The break was reported about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the corner of Withers Avenue and Reliez Valley Road, EBMUD spokesman Charles Hardy said.

Utility crews responded and saw that a 10-inch pipe had ruptured, Hardy said. As they prepared to fix the pipe, the crews also discovered a gas leak, so they halted repairs and called Pacific Gas & Electric, Hardy said.

PG&E crews responded and fixed the gas line shortly before noon, allowing EBMUD to continue its repair of the water main, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.

About 40 EBMUD customers remained without water late Wednesday afternoon, Hardy said. No PG&E customers were affected by the gas leak.

Flooding caused by the water main break damaged the yards and garages of four nearby homes, Hardy said.

The repair of the water main, which was likely to last late into Wednesday night, was take taking longer than usual because "it's a complicated break," he said.

There was damage to a T-shaped portion of the pipe, and that aspect of the repair will add two or three hours to the operation, Hardy explained.

He said it would be at least 9 p.m. Wednesday before water service was restored to all customers in the area.

The intersection of Withers Avenue and Reliez Valley Road also was to remain closed until the repair work was completed, Hardy said.
