Prince Tu'ipelehake and Princess Kaimana of Tonga.
A San Mateo County jury began deliberations Tuesday morning on the fate of a Redwood City teen facing charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for a crash that killed three people, including two members of the Tongan royal family, in July on U.S. Highway 101 in Menlo Park.
Edith Delgado, 19, is facing three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for her alleged role in the July 5 crash that killed Tonga's Prince Tu'ipelehake, 54; Princess Kaimana Tu'ipelehake, 45; and their driver, Vinisia Hefa, 36.
The prosecution alleges Delgado was speeding and dangerously weaving in and out of traffic in her white Ford Mustang when she changed lanes abruptly and sideswiped the victims' Ford Explorer, causing the fatal rollover crash on the highway.
Eyewitnesses testified that the Mustang was traveling at speeds between 80 and 90 mph, and also described seeing the Mustang appearing to be racing a black Cadillac Escalade moments before the crash.
Delgado's attorney Randy Moore conceded that his client used poor judgment, but argued that she was not grossly negligent.
Delgado could face a maximum of eight years in prison if convicted of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, according to the district attorney's office.
The jury began deliberations at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
