California Lt. Gov. Garamendi Running For Governor

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― California Lt. Gov. John Garamendi is running for governor again.

He announced his candidacy Thursday for California's top job in 2010, when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be termed out of office.

Garamendi lost the Democratic primary race for governor in 1982 and 1994.

He said he wants to improve the state's economy, implement a universal health care system, increase efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and beef up infrastructure.

One other Democrat, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, has formed an exploratory committee to consider running for governor.

Garamendi is a former state insurance commissioner who has served in both houses of the Legislature. He began his political career in 1974 in the state Assembly.
