All lanes of Interstate 880 in Oakland reopened in time for Friday's late afternoon commute after three lane closures to fix a large pothole caused traffic back-ups for more than six hours.
The emergency roadwork repairs began around 8:30 a.m. and were completed by 3:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Caltrans officials said a pothole developed in the pavement on the High Street Bridge near downtown Oakland, which prompted the closure of northbound lanes.
The repair work included the installation of new rebar and concrete to patch the hole.
The lane closures during the repairs had backed-up northbound traffic all the way into San Leandro to Marina Boulevard.
Because of the problem, big-rig trucks were allowed on westbound Interstate 580 during the fix, the CHP said.
