A 21-year-old driver was killed and his female passenger wounded when gunmen in another vehicle opened fire on them along Interstate 580 in Richmond during Tuesday afternoon's rush hour, authorities said.
The 19-year-old woman who survived said two men in a full-sized red van shot at least 12 rounds at them from a semi-automatic weapon while both vehicles were traveling eastbound on the highway prior to Bayview Avenue just after 4 p.m., Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said.
The car's driver, who later died from his wounds at a hospital, drove through a fence after being shot and stopped on Mead Street, which is an adjacent frontage road to the interstate, French said.
Officers set up yellow evidence markers along the side of the highway denoting bullet casings from the incident.
The van sped away after the shootings and investigators were trying to determine a motive.
The woman told police she did not know the suspects or why they shot at them, French said. She was expected to survive and was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Investigators said they could find no witnesses to the attack, despite the fact that it took place on a busy highway. They also noted that there was no apparent altercation before the shooting, but it seemed the couple were the intended target.
The eastbound side of the highway from Regatta Boulevard to Bayview Avenue was closed for about 90 minutes, snarling afternoon commute traffic, before reopening about 5:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
