Immigration Legislation At A GlanceThousands of people were expected to turn out for marches throughout the the region, demonstrating proposed changes in the nation's immigration laws.
With Friday's failure to reach an agreement on an immigration bill in the Senate, there is little hope for a compromise package being worked out soon.
The biggest demonstration march in the area is expected in San Jose at 3 p.m. at Story and King roads. Events include talks by political and religious leaders. At 4 p.m., participants will head for City Hall, at East Santa Clara and Fifth streets, with speakers at seven different points on the march route talking about a host of immigration-related issues. The march is expected to wind up at City Hall around 7 p.m.
Other marches are also planned Monday in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Concord.
The Berkeley march was scheduled for 12 p.m. at Sproul Plaza. Participants were to march through Berkeley at 1 p.m.
Concord's march will begin at 11 at Todos Santos Park. The march in Oakland began at St. Louis Bertrand Church at 9 a.m. and concluded at the Oakland Federal Building. Thousands of people marched down International Boulevard
In San Francisco a rally will be held starting at 5 p.m. at the intersection of 16th and Mission streets. Participants will then walk to 24th and Mission streets.
