Several gay rights groups are planning to boycott Saturday's black-tie fundraiser for the Human Rights Campaign. They accuse the national gay rights group of excluding the transgender community.
Their dispute is over the Human Rights Campaign's support of a federal civil rights bill that protected gays, lesbians and bisexuals, but not transsexual and transgender people from job discrimination.
Prominent gay rights groups and leaders plan to boycott Saturday's gala. Among the no-shows include Assemblyman Mark Leno and San Francisco Supervisors Tom Ammiano and Bevan Dufty.
Joe Solomonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, told CBS 5 the group ended up supporting a bill that excluded transgenders and transsexuals because otherwise the bill would not have passed.
Both sides say despite the rift over the civil rights bill, they are united behind one immediate goal: to defeat the anti-gay marriage amendment on the November ballot.
