Motorist Killed After Walking Into I-80 Traffic
CROCKETT (BCN) ―
The California Highway Patrol was investigating why a 29-year-old Roseville man walked into the path of a big-rig on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 Wednesday morning, CHP Officer Tom Maguire said.
At about 12:25 a.m., CHP officers spotted a green Toyota 4Runner parked on the right shoulder of eastbound Highway 80 near Pomona Street, just south of the Carquinez Bridge, Maguire said.
The officers pulled over to examine the car and spotted a man standing by the passenger door.
As the officers tried to contact him, he walked in front of his car and into the highway's right lane where he was struck by the big-rig, Maguire said.
The man, later identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as Kristian Valmadrid, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The big-rig's driver, a 42-year-old Paradise man, pulled over immediately after the crash and was unhurt, Maguire said.
The CHP is investigating whether Valmadrid intentionally walked in front of the big-rig, he said.
