A surf advisory issued by the National Weather Service for Bay Area beaches went into effect Friday morning as large waves began to hit the coast.
A northwest swell of 15 to 18 feet and winds of around 30 mph are making the sea choppy and caused the weather service to issue the surf advisory that went into effect at 10 a.m. for all beaches between Sonoma and Monterey counties.
The surf advisory is meant to warn beachgoers of the potential for rip currents and localized beach erosion.
Because of the dangerous conditions, the U.S. Coast Guard strongly recommends that people avoid going near beaches or other low-lying coastal areas over the holiday weekend.
