Hayward Driver Plows Into Police Cruiser, 1 Hurt

HAYWARD (BCN) ― A California Highway Patrol officer was injured in Hayward Saturday morning when a driver reportedly crashed through temporary safety barriers on a highway and collided with a patrol car conducting traffic control, a CHP officer said.

A CHP patrol vehicle was reportedly struck at around 12:45 a.m. by a vehicle traveling on northbound Interstate Highway 880 near Hesperian Boulevard, CHP Officer Nicole Pacheco said.

The patrol unit, which was controlling Highway 880 traffic for the safety of California Department of Transportation night crews working on the highway, was parked within a marked and lit safety zone when it was struck.

The CHP officer received minor injuries in the collision, Pacheco said.

The patrol car, which preliminary reports indicate was struck from behind at a high rate of speed, sustained heavy damage. Officers have not ruled out the possibility that alcohol was a factor in the crash, though further details were not yet being released by the CHP.

The collision remained under investigation.
