With the economy struggling, more and more Bay Area residents are looking to graduate school as a way to ride out the economic storm.
"Our applications this year are up about seven percent over the year before," said Don Polden, Dean of the Santa Clara University Law School. The uptick comes after three consecutive years of declining applications.
Meanwhile the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley has seen a hefty jump of 15 percent in applications.
Students at the law school say the current job market is making graduate school more attractive.
"People will sometimes be hesitant to jup right into something with an economic downturn," said law student Michael Antonini. "They might get laid off right away, the job is not as stable as you would like, you just don't want all that."
But graduate school does not come without a risk. The average Santa Clara law student graduates with $100,000 in student loans.
