Good Samaritan Killed In Bay Bridge Accident

OAKLAND (BCN) ― A 36-year-old man who flew onto the hood and through the windshield of a vehicle on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Wednesday died at a hospital later that night, officials said Thursday.

Anthony Christopher Shafer, a Danville resident, had stopped to help at the scene of another incident on westbound Interstate Highway 80 just east of Treasure Island when a vehicle struck Shafer, sending him airborne into another vehicle, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 7:53 p.m., CHP Officer A. Paulson said.

Shafer was transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland where he died, according to officials. The coroner was reportedly notified of Shafer's death at about 10:20 p.m.
