The Golden Gate Bridge re-opened just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after a three-vehicle, crossover collision on the northbound side near Marin County closed the entire bridge for about an hour, officials said.
The initial collision was reported at 3:14 p.m. near the north tower and a Sig-alert was issued at 3:23 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The San Francisco Fire Department responded and helped with at least three extrications, fire Lt. Ken Smith said.
Cross said one car traveling southbound crossed over to the northbound side, colliding with an oncoming vehicle.
A child was airlifted and was listed in critical but stable condition, according to Smith. The two drivers involved in the initial head-on collision were sent by ground transportation to local hospitals and were considered in critical condition, CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said.
CHP previously reported six vehicles were involved but Cross said the collision involved only three.
The Southern Marin County Fire Department and the Golden Gate Bridge Authority also assisted at the scene, Smith said.
Cross said drivers should expect heavy traffic until at least 5:15 p.m.
