Giants Draft Pitcher Zack Wheeler With 6th Pick
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP) ―
The San Francisco Giants have selected pitcher Zack Wheeler with the sixth overall pick in the draft.
The 6-foot-4, 175-pound Wheeler, a hard-throwing right-hander, went 9-0 with a 0.54 ERA in his senior season at East Paulding High in Georgia, including pitching a no-hitter.
Tim Lincecum has shown the Giants just how beneficial the right draft choice can be.
He won the NL Cy Young award last season at age 24, only two years removed from the University of Washington. Not that it works out so well very often, but the Giants have committed themselves to the draft in recent years after seeing the immediate benefits of a talent like Lincecum.
Last year, it was catcher Buster Posey taken No. 5 overalland he's already showing why the club thinks he'll make a quick leap to the big leagues and perhaps be Bengie Molina's successor soon.
