The Proposition 8 gay marriage ban has become a highly visible campaign across California, perhaps nowhere more so than in the front yard of one South Bay family.
When someone stole the "Yes on 8" sign from the front yard Sundstrom's San Jose yard they upgraded to a larger sign, and hung it above their garage.
On Sunday, two supporters of gay marriage pulled up in front of the home, got out, and painted slogans such as "bigots live here" on their Suburban. They then locked the car and left.
The Sundstroms called the police, but an officer told them he couldn't do much about the car unless it was parked for more than 3 days on the public street.
The Sundstroms have taken particular care not to touch or wash off the message, hoping it will just go away without further incident. Even if it is an embarrassment to all who pass by.
Michele Sundstrom has had difficulty explaining the van to her children, "My 11-year-old asked me 'What's a bigot? Is that a bad word?'"
The Sundstroms said they have been flooded with calls from people on both sides of the issue. They all have one thing in common. No matter how much they disagree on gay marriage, they all agree this is just going too far.
