A majority of Californians now say they support allowing same-sex marriages, according to a recent poll conducted for CBS 5 by Survey USA.
The poll conducted just a week before the official legalization date for gay marriage in the state of 500 adults found that 56 percent of respondents thought same-sex couples should be allowed to marry in California, while 41 percent thought they should not.
However, the CBS 5 poll also revealed a conflict among Californians that cannot be easily explained.
When the same group of respondents was asked, 44 percent said they supported amending the state constitution to define marriage as being between one man and one woman. Only 38 percent opposed the measure, which will appear on the November election ballot.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.
