Search Concludes At Garrido Home With Little Found

ANTIOCH (CBS 5 / KCBS / AP / BCN) ― Search teams from Alameda County crime labs on Tuesday evening concluded a weeklong search of the home and backyard near Antioch where Phillip Garrido allegedly held a girl captive for 18 years.

Investigators said they found nothing significant that would link Garrido to either the 1988 abduction of Michaela Garecht in Hayward or the 1989 disappearance of Ilene Misheloff in Dublin.

Search crews were trying to determine if Garrido, who along with his wife Nancy is charged with kidnapping Jaycee Dugard in 1991, was possibly connected to those other abductions.

The crews spent much of the day on Tuesday digging in an area in a next door neighbor's yard where radars showed anomalies in the soil.

Police put all the dirt fragments through screens, searching for evidence like bone fragments and jewelry.

"We will walk away from these properties knowing we left no stone unturned," Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey said. "We will never have to wonder if we could have or should have because we know that we did."

But police said that by ending the search, Garrido had not been ruled out as a possible suspect.

Investigators still planned to examine boxes of documents and other evidence collected from the Garrido property.

"Detectives will continue to pursue this lead as well as any and all leads," Dublin police Lt. Kurt von Savoye said. "I know someone is out there who knows something and we will keep searching for answers to what happened."

Police urged anyone with any information about Ilene's disappearance to call the Dublin Police Department at (925) 833-6670 and anyone with information about Michaela's abduction to call (800) 222-3999.

Investigators said they were still holding out hope that, like Jaycee, Michaela and Ilene would be found alive.

Dugard, now 29, was allegedly forced to live in a series of tents and sheds in Garrido's backyard for 18 years, where she gave birth to two daughters fathered by him.
