Lawyer Pushes For De Anza Gang-Rape Prosecution
SAN JOSE (BCN) ―
A former prosecutor representing three young women who say they rescued a teenage girl from an alleged gang rape by De Anza College baseball players has pledged to push for criminal charges in the case.
"At this point, all these women want is justice for this young woman that they saw being raped," said Jim Hammer, a former San Francisco prosecutor who also works as a television legal analyst.
Protests followed Santa Clara County District Attorney Dolores Carr's May announcement that investigators did not find enough evidence to prosecute the players.
The allegations stem from a March birthday party at the home of a De Anza infielder where the 17-year-old claims she was gang-raped.
Hammer is representing April Grolle, Lauren Chief Elk and Lauren Breayans, De Anza women's soccer players who claim they forced their way into a room while the assault was taking place.
The state attorney general's office is reviewing the case to determine whether Carr's decision was appropriate.
