An environmental group said Tuesday that more than half the household furniture sold in California contains dangerous levels of chemicals known as halogenated fire retardants.
The group Friends of the Earth said it studied 350 pieces of household furniture and found that two-thirds of the furniture tested in retail stores and over half of the furniture tested had high levels.
The chemicals have been linked to cancer, birth defects, hormone disruption, and reproductive and neurological dysfunction, especially in infants and children. The fire retardants are widely used to meet California's strict flammability requirements.
Friends of the Earth backs legislation by San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno to phase out the chemicals in favor of less toxic fire retardants.
