A ferry boat on a cruise around San Francisco Bay apparently hit a large rock Thursday afternoon triggering concerns about a possible fuel spill, but officials said the boat docked safely and an inspection showed no leak.
The Red & White Ferry boat was navigating the waters around Alcatraz Island when an object hit the bottom of the boat where the fule tanks are located, a ferry company manager told CBS 5.
The U.S. Coast Guard was investigating the incident which the ship's pilot immediately reported. No passengers on the boat were hurt.
The ferry was docked at San Francisco's Pier 43, where a damage inspection found the ship's hull was not punctured.
The Coast Guard and a cargo ship firm drew criticism for their actions and slow response following a Nov. 7 crash involving the Cosco Busan vessel with a Bay Bridge support structure. The mishap caused a 58,000-gallon oil spill in the Bay that disrupted fishing and closed area beaches.
