2 Dead From Separate Alameda, Santa Clara Crashes

(CBS 5 / BCN) A man was killed in a two-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate Highway 580 in unincorporated Alameda County on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The victim had yet to be identified Wednesday night, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The collision occurred around 4:50 p.m. when a big rig truck and a van collided near North Flynn Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Elsewhere, two 18-year-old men were inside a white Mazda Miata in unincorporated Santa Clara County east of Milpitas Wednesday afternoon when it flipped over, killing one of them and injuring the other.

Nickolas Piazza of Milpitas was driving the vehicle just before 2 p.m. at Felter Road just south of Calaveras Road when he lost control of the vehicle during a left curve in the road, CHP Officer Todd Thibodeau said.

The vehicle struck an embankment and overturned, coming to a rest on its roof in the westbound lane, he said.

The 18-year-old passenger, whose identity was not being released pending notification of family, struck his head on the pavement and died at the scene. Piazza was transported to San Jose Regional Medical Center for minor injuries, the CHP said.

The CHP said excessive speed may have been a cause of the fatal crash.
