OPD Still Looking For Clues To Fatal Hit-And-Run

OAKLAND (BCN) ― Oakland police handed out more than 250 flyers Friday morning to remind residents the department is still looking for leads in the hit-and-run incident that killed 11-year-old Alana Williams on Oct. 16.

Williams was a sixth grader at Frick Middle School when she was killed nearby at a four-way stop at 64th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.

She had just stepped off a school bus and was crossing the street when she was hit, police said. The driver fled, and no suspects have been arrested.

The incident happened at 8:08 on a Friday morning, so police handed out flyers between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. today at the intersection.

"We know there's somebody who knows who did this," Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. "The driver is still out there, and we need to bring closure to this case."

Officers stood on both sides of Foothill Boulevard and gave flyers with information about the case to motorists while they were stopped at the intersection.

Thomason said he didn't know of any other instances in which the department had handed out flyers in the community a month after an incident.

He said it was important to let people in the area know that police are still investigating the case and plan to keep doing so.

"No parent should ever have to go through losing a young child," he said. "Eleven years old is too young."

The flyers contained details about the fatal hit-and-run and information about a $10,000 reward that is being offered to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest in the case. Award recipients can remain anonymous to the public, Thomason said.
