A crossing guard has been hired to increase safety at the Oakland intersection where an 11-year-old girl was killed last week on her way to school.
Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums announced that a crossing guard will start work Thursday at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and 64th Avenue.
Sixth-grader Alana Williams was struck and killed in a crosswalk at the intersection Friday morning. Police are still searching for the driver responsible for her death.
"My heart goes out to the family and friends of Alana Williams," Dellums said in a statement. "We can only imagine how painful it is for the family of Ms. Williams and the students at Frick Middle School to lose such a young and vibrant person."
Last month, the city was awarded a $491,000 Bicycle Care Safety Grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety that will help fund new crossing guard positions around Oakland elementary and middle schools.
"Our immediate response is to use state grants to hire crossing guards and help ensure that no one has to experience the level of tragedy of Ms. Williams' family," Dellums said.
He said the city will consider implementing other safety measures, including installing a stoplight at the intersection.
Oakland police announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the hit-and-run driver who killed Alana Williams. Anyone with information can call Oakland police Officer Greg Bellusa at (510) 777-8648 or Crime Stoppers at (510) 777-3211.
