1 Dead, 2 Hurt After SUV Runs Them Down In SJ Park
SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―
The driver of a large sport utility vehicle was under arrest after allegedly running down three men at a San Jose park Sunday, killing one and injuring the other two, police said.
The white Chevrolet Suburban drove into Hillview Park at Berona and Alfred ways on the eastern side of the city around 8:45 a.m. and struck the three victims as they walked along a sidewalk, according to witnesses.
Police said the driver fled the park after running down the victims and was arrested about an hour later in another part of the city.
The incident took place in the area of a soccer game in the park and homicide investigators were trying to determine if the driver struck the victims intentionally.
If so, the case could be handled as a murder, explained San Jose police Officer Enrique Garcia.
If detectives find the accident was not intentional, the driver would likely be charged with a hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, Garcia said.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene while the two others were hospitalized, one in stable condition and the other in critical, Garcia said.
Authorities had not released the names of the victims or the driver.
Homicide detectives on Sunday afternoon were interviewing roughly 20 people who saw the attack, Garcia said.
