SF Driver Gunned Down Along I-280 With Kids In Car

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― A driver was killed Wednesday evening in a rush-hour shooting on a busy San Francisco freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The investigation shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate Highway 280 between the Alemany Boulevard and Monterey Boulevard for several hours after the fatal shooting, which was reported around 6 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Luis Solari, 37, of Richmond, dead with two children inside a 2004 burgundy Honda, CHP Officer Shawn Chase said. The 8-year-old and a 7-year-old were uninjured.

According to witnesses, another vehicle fled the scene. They said the shooter's car was a gold or tan Toyota -- but police described the suspect vehicle as a small red four-door car.

CHP and the San Francisco Police Department were investigating the shooting. Authorities said they did not know what prompted the attack.

SFPD Sgt. Neville Gittens said it is believed that Solari's car was driving to the left of the suspect vehicle and that shots were fired from the suspect vehicle's driver's side into the victim vehicle's passenger side.

Solari's vehicle then crashed into the center divide before drifting across the lanes and stopping in some ivy on the shoulder, Gittens said.

Southbound traffic was routed off the freeway on the Alemany Blvd. exit until the highway reopened around 9 p.m.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the police tip line at (415) 575-4444.
