Families Sue In S. Bay Fatal Cyclists Crash

CUPERTINO (AP) ― The parents of two bicyclists struck and killed by a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy have filed wrongful-death lawsuits against the deputy, county and sheriff's office.

James Council has pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor charges of vehicular manslaughter in the deaths of 29-year-old Matt Peterson and 30-year-old Kristy Gough.

Council was on patrol on March 9 when his car crossed double-yellow traffic lines on a winding road in Cupertino and hit the experienced cyclists, who were on a training ride.

Some witnesses at the scene said they heard the deputy say he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Santa Clara County Counsel Ann Ravel says the county is liable for the incident. Both suits seek unspecified monetary damages.
