Man Arrested In Fatal CoCo Hit And Run

EL SOBRANTE (BCN) ― A 53-year-old El Sobrante man was arrested earlier this month in connection with a crash that killed a bicyclist in unincorporated Contra Costa County in November, a California Highway Patrol officer said Thursday.

Harold Brown was arrested June 2 on suspicion of fatally striking Martinez cyclist Mark Pendleton, 49, on McEwen Road near state Highway 4 the evening of Nov. 24, CHP Officer Mike Wright said.

Brown was booked on charges of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, Wright said.

Wright did not provide details surrounding the arrest.

"We don't want to jeopardize the case,'' Wright said. "We don't want to release any information that might do that.''

He said the CHP is working closely with the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.

In the days following the collision, investigators had said a vehicle, possibly a dark-colored Chevrolet Silverado or similar model pickup truck or sport utility vehicle, crossed over the yellow lines and hit Pendleton head on as he was riding south on McEwen Road sometime between 5:45 p.m. and 6 p.m.

An off-duty fire captain from Crockett found Pendleton just after 6 p.m. and called for medical assistance, but Pendleton died at the scene.

Pendleton was just five minutes from home when he was killed, according to his family.

Anyone with information about the incident or who has seen a vehicle with recent front-end damage is asked to call (925) 646-4980 or (800) TELL-CHP.
