OAKLAND (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― A video making the rounds on the Internet shows Oakland Police using a taser on a fan who they said was drunk and unruly at the Oakland Athletics ballpark on Tuesday night.

But on Thursday, OPD defended their officers' actions in using the taser at the game.

Oakland Police spokesman Jeff Thomason said other fans were complaining about 62-year-old Thomas Bruso, a 280-pound man they said was acting belligerent and yelling profanities.

When Bruso resisted attempts by A's security to eject him, it prompted them to call in the police to have him removed.

When officers arrived, they said the man took a swipe at them — and because of his size — one officer deemed him a threat and zapped him in the shoulder with a taser.

The disruption affected both the fans in the area and even distracted some of the players on the field.

Thomason said the officers handled the situation correctly.

"Officers did try to take him into custody by grabbing his arms. He pulled away," Thomason said. "We don't want our officers getting injured and we don't want the suspect getting injured. So they deployed the taser and it was effective."

Thomason said Bruso was mentally unbalanced, had brought alcohol into the game and was resisting arrest.
