Marin Honors Fallen Iraq War Soldier

22-year-old Jake Velloza of Inverness was among two soldiers killed during an attack in Mosul, Iraq.

The body of a Marin soldier killed in Iraq this month was returned to his family Wednesday.
Army Spc. Jake Robert Velloza, of Inverness, was killed in Iraq on May 2 by a lone sniper in Mosul. His body was flown to SFO Wednesday morning, where it was greeted by the Patriot Guard, and then transported to Petaluma.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, 10189 State Highway 1, Olema. Interment is at the Olema Cemetery.
A visitation is scheduled Friday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Parent-Sorensen Mortuary & Crematory at 850 Keokuk St. in Petaluma. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. that day at St. James Church, 125 Sonoma Mountain Parkway, Petaluma.
Velloza graduated from Tomales High School in 2004 where he played baseball and football. He also attended the College of Marin before joining the Army in 2006. He was on his second tour of duty when he was killed by enemy fire in Mosul, Iraq.
