Escaped Felon Still On Loose In Santa Clara County

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

SAN MARTIN (BCN) ― Officers in Santa Clara County continue to search for a felon who allegedly tried to run down sheriff's deputies during an escape on Tuesday.

At around 11:50 p.m., deputies were heading to a home at 10000 Harding Ave. in the community of San Martin in order to arrest 39-year-old Joel Barnes, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Barnes is sought by the sheriff's office on charges that include assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of illegal firearms, domestic violence and residential burglary involving a theft of a handgun.  Barnes has served time for a voluntary manslaughter conviction, according to the Sheriff's office.

As two patrol cars approached the residence, Barnes allegedly drove his 1973 green Ford pickup truck directly at them, forcing the first deputy to drive off the road into a ditch, and side-swiping the vehicle of the second.

Barnes then made a U-turn and drove his truck directly at a deputy who had exited his disabled patrol car. According to the sheriff's office, the deputy believed Barnes was attempting to run him over with his truck, and fired his gun several times in an effort to stop him.

It could not be confirmed if Barnes was shot in the exchange.

The suspect then drove off and led deputies on a chase for several miles, which ended in Mount Madonna State Park near Santa Cruz County.

Deputies lost sight of Barnes' truck somewhere in the park, according to the sheriff's office, and extensive search efforts to locate the suspect since have not been successful.

Anyone with information regarding Barnes' whereabouts is asked to contact Santa Clara County sheriff Sgt. David Lera or Sgt. Fred Alanis at (408) 808-4500.
