2,000 Compete In 'Escape From Alcatraz' Triathlon

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― About 2,000 top athletes participated in the "Escape from Alcatraz" triathlon Sunday. It started with a jump off of a boat at Alcatraz Island.

"The jump off wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be," said Corte Madera athlete Paul Snyman. "And the swim itself was actually much calmer than I thought it would be, but you are still getting people crawling up over you, but it was a good time."

Snyman finished the 1.5 mile swim to the St. Francis Yacht Club, but some of the racers got stuck in a current, and were sent off course, meaning they had to swim further.

That was followed by 18 miles on a bike, and an 8-mile run.

Competitors as old as 70 participated in the 28th annual race. Andy Potts of Colorado Springs and Leanda Cave from Mill Valley were the winners, the same as last year's event
