Survey Shows Declining Support For Props. 98 & 99
SACRAMENTO (AP) ―
A new survey shows most California voters want to curb government's power of eminent domain, but support has waned for two property-rights initiatives that would impose limits.
The Public Policy Institute of California survey to be released Thursday found that support for propositions 98 and 99 on the June 3 primary election ballot falls short of a majority.
Thirty percent of likely voters support Proposition 98, while 44 percent support Proposition 99. That compares to 37 percent and 53 percent of voters, respectively, who were surveyed in March.
Proposition 98 would forbid government from using eminent domain to take homes, businesses and farms for private development. It also would phase out rent control. Fifty four percent of likely voters surveyed say they think rent control is a good thing.
Proposition 99 would forbid government from taking homes for private development.
Both initiatives would continue to require government to pay fair market value when it seizes property.
