SFPD: No Foul Play In Man's Elevator Shaft Plunge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP) ― San Francisco police said Wednesday that they don't suspect foul play in the death of a man whose body was found at the bottom of an elevator shaft nearly a week after he fell.

The victim, 38-year-old Daniel Kliman, was found in the historic Sharon Building at 55 New Montgomery Street in downtown San Francisco.

Kliman took Arabic speaking courses on the seventh floor at the Pacific Arabic Resources School — although classes had been canceled the night of Nov. 25, when authorities believe the fall happened.

A building manager said that elevator wasn't operating properly and had been secured, but Kliman tried to summon it. Police believe he accidentally stepped into the open shaft.

His body was found six days later by workers who came to repair the elevator.

Friends and colleagues of Kliman, a pro-Israel activist, had feared he was the victim of a crime. But a police spokesman said Wednesday that there was no evidence supporting that theory.
