At its first hearing next week on the suspension of Ed Jew, the city's Ethics Commission must decide exactly how it will carry out a first-of-its-kind proceeding.
Members must decide whether the supervisor should be allowed to serve as he defends himself against two sets of criminal charges, one stemming from questions about his legal residence, the other from a federal bribery investigation.
"You have to put procedures in place that protect everybody's due process and by the very definition of that, it means it's going to take some time," said City Attorney Dennis Herrera.
At next week's hearing, Herrera's office and Jew's legal team will weigh in on the shape of the proceedings. If the supervisor's lawyers are not successful in blocking the proceedings, a hearing on the actual charges against him would likely happen at the end of October, Herrera said.
The five commissioners themselves have decided it's inappropriate to discuss the case with the media.
