Dry Weather Feeds Wildfires In Sonoma, Solano, SJ

SANTA ROSA (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Bay Area firefighters battled at least three wildfires that ignited Monday afternoon on the first day of fire season, which started early in the region due to extremely dry conditions.

A brush fire that burned on a hill alongside Highway 101 in Sonoma County briefly closed northbound lanes just south of Railroad Avenue in Santa Rosa. The 15 to 20 acre blaze was quickly put out by fire crews.

A median grass fire caused poor visability on Interstate 505 near the Solano and Yolo counties border. The fire near Wolfskill Road burned high, dry weeds along an estimated 300 yards of the median before firefighters extinguished it.

In San Jose, a "moderate vegetative fire" in San Jose today was declared under control after a little over four hours. Nearly 50 firefighters and a Cal Fire helicopter battled the two-alarm grass in the area of Roberts and Phelan avenues.

San Jose Fire Capt. Craig Schwinge said the blaze caused no injuries and did not get close to any residences.
