The tanker truck containing wine ran into the car on Highway 12.
An adult and a child died in a head-on collision between their Buick and a tanker-trailer hauling wine on state Highway 12 in San Joaquin County near the Solano County border Friday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
CHP Officer Adrian Quintero said the two occupants of the 1989 Buick Century were trapped in their vehicle and burned to death.
The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. when the Buick traveling east on Highway 12 crossed into the westbound lane and collided with the 1996 Peterbilt tanker-trailer owned by Cherokee Freight Lines east of Correia Road, Quintero said.
The driver of the big-rig, Juan Prado, 38, of Merced, complained of pain and was taken to Lodi Memorial Hospital, Quintero said. He was tested at the scene and was not found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Traffic was backed up on state Highway 12 to Rio Vista, the CHP said. Highway 12 reopened around 4:10 p.m.
