Peninsula Siblings To Face Trial In Sister Neglect

REDWOOD CITY (AP) ― A judge says a brother and sister should stand trial for neglecting their mentally disabled sister by forcing her to live in an 8-by-12-foot metal shed with a mattress and portable toilet.

San Mateo County prosecutors say police found the 58-year-old mentally ill woman last month shivering in a thin nightgown when they investigated an unrelated call at the home of 46-year-old Bertha Lozano and 53-year-old Jesus Ramirez.

Police say the siblings stole her disability checks.

The woman told investigators she received $700 a month from Supplemental Security Income, but they found no bank account in her name and no evidence that she received any money.

The siblings are charged with neglect of a disabled person and embezzlement and are being held on $250,000 bail.
