Thousands Abusing Disabled Parking Placard System
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ―
The abuse of the disabled parking placard system has been a rampant problem in California for years. Now the state is trying a new effort to crackdown on Californians who break the law.
Governor Schwarzenegger recently signed a law increasing the penalty for violators. One look at the extent of the abuse shows why. Placards are so out-of control that there are now 50,000 of them just in San Francisco. That's twice the number of parking meters in the city. In Alameda County there are almost 102,000 placards, compared with 76,000 in Contra Costa, and 96,000 in Santa Clara County.
More than 18 years after he first covered the problem, Hank Plante's video report takes a look at the chances of this latest reform stopping the abuse.
