An announcement by DHL that it will cut 9,500 jobs nationwide will mean the loss of more than 800 jobs in the Bay Area, according to the Teamsters union.
The global delivery company said Monday that it would discontinue air and ground operations within the United States because of the recession. But it says it will continue its DHL Express unit between the U.S. and other nations.
"You can't look at this and find anything positive at all. I mean it's extremely painful," said Chuck Mack, president of the Teamsters Joint Council 7.
Bay Area resident Craig Andrade, who started at DHL in 1985, is four years from retirement and is uncertain about his family's future. "I'm searching for work at this time. There's no work jumping out of the bushes at you, so you're going to have to go looking for it," he said.
