An empty car was found atop a cliff at Devil's Slide Monday morning and authorities were investigating what appeared to be a body below, a San Mateo County sheriff's lieutenant said.

The incident was reported at 11 a.m. at Gray Whale Cove, acting sheriff's Lt. Wes Matsuura said.

"A body has been seen down the cliff," he said.

The license plates on the car match those of a vehicle belonging to a person reported missing out of Berkeley, Matsuura said.

Authorities were attempting to retrieve the body from the cliff.
